The oldest liquor store in the country is right on one of the most famous streets in Charleston! Located on Rainbow Row, “The Tavern” is still receiving customers today. Open since 1686, this vintage store started as an illegal toppling house, where sailors and locals would buy different types of drinks.
Today, it’s owned by Charleston Spirits and its doors are still open and receiving customers. Don’s expect a huge liquor store, “The Tavern” is located in a tiny beige-colored building, and features a large selection of whiskey, rum, wine, moonshine, and local bottles.
As you step into the store, you’ll find yourself traveling back in time. Keep your eyes open for their vintage items and historical objects! The staff is helpful and friendly, so don’t hesitate on asking them for recommendations and for them to show you the trap door where they served during the prohibition era.
Plan your visit ahead! The liquor store also hosts tastings on a regular basis. They don’t have a calendar of events on their website, so we recommend you to call them beforehand for more information about the time and cost. This hidden gem is a must-see when visiting the Holy City!
