As one of the early incubators of jazz in the US, The Holy City knows a thing or two about the genre. From its Gullah roots to the Charleston dance, the history is palpable. Now, The Jazz Room in Charleston continues this tradition, bringing echoes of Louis Armstrong, Irving Mills and Spencer Williams to a cozy joint in the city. This 60-minute live show combines talented performers in dialogue, familiar melodies under fresh phrasing and improvised solos that really bring the spirit of jazz to life.

A Journey to New Orleans
New Orleans sits at the center of this setlist. The music draws on the early jazz vocabulary shaped by Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, where brass lines carry both power and soul, rhythms lean into swing, and ensemble passages open naturally into individual statements. Standards associated with the city’s legacy surface in the phrasing and feel, alongside the loose-limbed energy that made this tradition travel far beyond Louisiana. The musicians take on classics like “What a Wonderful World” and “Basin Saint Blues”, alongside electrifying solos.
What Is The Jazz Room?
The Jazz Room is a live jazz performance running for roughly an hour in an intimate setting where the players stay in close conversation. Depending on the night, the theme moves through a distinct lineage, artist, or tradition—New Orleans jazz, the language of swing, or songbooks and standards shaped by major figures such as Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, or Nina Simone. Expect timeless classics, moving solos, and a lot of heart.
The Jazz Room is coming to The Cedar Room on select dates over the coming months and you won’t want to miss it. By the end, you’ll be transported back to the golden era of jazz, the emotion of a horn line, the lift of a rhythm section.
Tickets are sold in tiers and seating is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If you’d like to let loose and enjoy the show with a glass in hand, drinks are available for purchase at the venue.
