Local to Charleston or not, movies are always a great way to get to know new and unique places in the city. The Lowcountry is one of the favorite places for moviemakers to set their stories. Have you seen all of the films on the list?
These are six movies that were filmed in Charleston:
1. The Patriot
This is one of Mel Gibson’s most well-known movies. Starring him and Heath Ledger, it was filmed in Middleton Plantation, Edisto Beach, and the College of Charleston.
2. The Notebook
The Notebook used many of Charleston’s beautiful corners, for that gave it a unique romantic vibe. You’ll recognize Boone Hall Plantation, Cypress Gardens, and downtown Charleston.
3. Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Who remembers this movie starred by Jim Carrey? It was filmed on Edisto Island. It was successfully transformed into a jungle and different African villages!
4. Cold Mountain
The story is based on a book by Charles Frazier. Even though most of it was filmed in Europe, some scenes were done in Charleston. You’ll be able to see the College of Charleston and Cypress Gardens.
5. Dear John
Nicholas Sparks love to shoot movies for his books in the Lowcountry. Starred by Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum, the romantic film tells the story of a couple during the post 9/11 years. Look for Bowen’s Island Restaurant, Sullivans Island, the College of Charleston, and The Citadel.
6. Halloween
Scary stories are also on the menu! Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laure Strode. The movie was filmed at Military Magnet High School and houses around Old Windermere.
